Why is the list price US$50 in Australia but US$30 in America? It’s not because of shipping costs.

It’s a game that you download through Steam. When you’ve got a slothful short-term memory like me, able only to remember a few puzzle clues at most, the amount of time spend flicking through the menus is annoying.Ī fairly trivial problem, perhaps, but I mention it because it was about the only usablity-type problem in the game.

The problem is that these challenges are a chore to access, deep in the menu/notebook system. Lovely feature, really adds some extra hours to the game for anyone so inclined. I wouldn’t want to see puzzle levels removed as they’re fun too, but why abandon the platforming? Was there a concern that people would bypass all the challenge in (say) a helicopter? They may very well do so, but I’d argue that the traditional puzzles are just as bypassably-easy thanks to adjectives (see above).Īpart from the “main quest” stuff, Scribblenauts Unlimited has a raft of “side quest” puzzles that revolve around creating the right object for a given clue. Scribblenauts Unlimited has next to none of these “platformer” levels, and instead consists mostly of puzzles where you just need to create the right item. You had to reach an objective with only your wits and your magical ability to create anything. I’ve played small amounts of the older Scribblenauts games and I seem to remember there were a lot of platformer-style levels with baddies and hazards. Perhaps just disable them for some of the harder puzzles? Overuse this and the game can fly by quickly and without much challenge.Īdjectives are a cool feature and natural fit, so I wouldn’t want to remove them. With adjectives, you have to think of ten of anything and just add scary as an adjective (scary apple, scary hat, scary chair, scary milkman…). Without adjectives, you’d scratch your head and have to think of ten things that are scary (ghost, zombie, dentist, monster… umm…). As I discovered, you can solve much of the game using a single noun so long as you apply the right adjectives.įor instance, suppose an NPC wants ten scary items. Scribblenauts Unlimited adds adjectives to the mix, so instead of just creating a bucket, you can create a lycanthropic bucket. Being kid-friendly doesn’t have to make a game unappealing to adults. The graphics, the music, the writing are all charming. Have a read of my early experiences with the game to see what I mean. This is the game’s draw, and I cannot emphasise it enough. Scribblenauts’ unique concept of creating anything (anything!) to solve problems is novel and immensely fun. Metacritic gives Scribblenauts Unlimited a score of 77. I was planning to use screenshots of this chaos for this review.

Which is a shame, because while I was doing the optional side-quests for Scribblenauts Unlimited I packed some levels full to the object limit of bizarre people and things. This time around, it was my Steam screenshot directory. Every time I get a new PC, I take various precautions to not lose data.
